Shipping Discounts for Small Business

Are you Getting the Best Shipping Discounts?

The best way for a small business to get a good discount on shipping rates is to ship indiscount shipping volume with one carrier. But “volume” can mean different things to different courier companies, and you may or may not qualify for those rates, even though you’re technically a “small business”.

Small business discounts aren’t necessarily as great as you’d think
It doesn’t even really matter what shipping company you go to, if you look into their small business deals, they’re all around the same. They offer an incentive to sign-up, say, up to 30% off all shipments for the first six months. But when that time’s up, you’ll only save around 15% on shipping, and that’s only you qualify (for example, if you meet a monthly average in shipping charges, usually around $1,300/month). They all advertise the fact that more you ship, the more you save – so if you only ship a few packages a week, you’ll only get the minimum discount… if that. The average discount is only around 5%, which isn’t a whole lot, in the grand scheme of things.

Small business or SMALL business
Even the definition of small business can vary, depending on your country, or even state or province.  Most of the time, a business size is based on the number of employees, but even those numbers include a fairly large range –  anything from fewer than 15 to as many as 250. It’s usually safe to assume that a company with 250 employees has more customers than a company with a staff of 10. So if shipping discounts are based on volume, it would make sense that company with 250 employees would ship more, therefore would qualify for a better volume discount.

But doesn’t a 10-person operation with less cash flow need a discount just as much – or even more so – as a company employing 250 people? We thinks so, too.
