Does Canada Post deliver on weekends? For years, the answer was mostly no. However, that’s changing. Canada Post is rolling out Canada Post weekend delivery for eligible ecommerce parcels in the Greater Toronto Area (GTA), Ottawa and Montréal, with Saturday or Sunday delivery to residential addresses at no extra cost.
Here’s what’s changing, which shipments qualify, and how to get the most out of weekend delivery when you ship with Canada Post through netParcel.
Canada Post weekend delivery at a glance
- Where: Eligible postal codes in the GTA, Ottawa and Montréal. Vancouver, Calgary and Edmonton are planned for 2027.
- When: Rolling out since October 2026, with all three markets scheduled to be running by late November.
- Cost: No extra charge. It’s part of Canada Post’s standard delivery for eligible parcels.
- What qualifies: Domestic parcel services going to residential addresses.
- What you need to do: Nothing. Eligible parcels arrive on Saturday or Sunday automatically.
What is Canada Post weekend delivery?
Weekend delivery is a new part of Canada Post’s standard parcel service. Eligible parcels heading to participating neighbourhoods can now arrive on a Saturday or Sunday instead of waiting until Monday.
It isn’t a premium add-on, so there’s nothing to select. If the parcel qualifies and the destination is in a participating area, Canada Post can deliver it on the weekend. In short, Canada Post wants to keep orders moving through the weekend and keep up with shoppers who now expect faster delivery.
Where is weekend delivery available?
Weekend delivery covers eligible Forward Sortation Areas (FSAs), the first three characters of a postal code, in:
- The Greater Toronto Area (GTA)
- Ottawa
- Montréal
Weekend delivery doesn’t cover every postal code in these cities, so check your customer’s FSA against the eligible FSA list on Canada Post’s weekend delivery page.
Saturday or Sunday? Canada Post sets the weekend delivery day for each FSA. In other words, shippers can’t choose between Saturday and Sunday.
Coming in 2027: Canada Post plans to expand weekend delivery to Vancouver, Calgary and Edmonton, bringing coverage to more than 7 million Canadian households.
Which Canada Post shipments qualify?
Weekend delivery applies to Canada Post’s domestic parcel services, including Regular Parcel, Expedited Parcel, Xpresspost and Priority, when they’re going to a residential delivery point such as:
- Door-to-door home delivery
- Community mailboxes
- Apartment and condo lockers
- Parcel lockers
However, it works best for parcels that can reach the destination market within about one day of processing. In practice, orders shipped within or close to the GTA, Ottawa or Montréal will see the biggest benefit.
What isn’t eligible
- Lettermail and Direct Mail
- PO Boxes
- Collect on Delivery (COD)
- Deliver to Post Office and Card for Pickup items
- Returns
- Large volume (LVR) addresses
- Commercial addresses that are usually closed on weekends
Outside participating areas, Canada Post still delivers on weekdays.
How much does Canada Post weekend delivery cost?
Nothing extra. Canada Post includes weekend delivery in its standard service for eligible parcels, so your rate stays the same whether a parcel arrives on Friday, Saturday or Sunday. Also, on netParcel you’ll see the same discounted Canada Post rates you already get, with no weekend surcharge.
What if a weekend delivery attempt fails?
If Canada Post can’t complete delivery on the weekend, it makes a second attempt on the next business day. Canada Post also won’t automatically send a weekend parcel to a post office for pickup after a missed attempt.
Will delivery dates show weekends?
Canada Post expects to update its published service standards to include weekend delivery starting November 21, 2026. Until then, the expected delivery date on your quote may still show a weekday, even if the parcel ends up arriving on Saturday or Sunday.
What weekend delivery means for ecommerce sellers
A lot of online orders come in on Thursday and Friday, and until now many of them sat in the network until Monday. As a result, they can now be on your customer’s doorstep over the weekend. A few ways to take advantage:
- Ship Thursday and Friday orders the same day. Parcels that reach a participating market within about a day are the most likely to arrive on the weekend.
- Update your delivery promise. If many of your customers are in the GTA, Ottawa or Montréal, you can promote faster delivery at checkout. Keep it to “as early as,” since not every FSA is covered.
- Expect fewer “where’s my order?” emails on Monday. Instead of waiting out the weekend, more parcels now reach customers before Monday.
- Skip options that block weekend delivery. Deliver to Post Office, Card for Pickup and COD all take a parcel out of weekend delivery.
- Keep B2B expectations the same. However, business addresses that close on weekends will still get weekday delivery.
Weekend delivery from other carriers
Canada Post isn’t the only carrier adding weekend service. UPS recently added Saturday ground delivery to Vancouver and Calgary for eligible GTA shipments,. Meanwhile, UniUni offers next-day and same-day delivery in supported areas. So with netParcel, you can compare Canada Post, UPS, Purolator, FedEx, UniUni and more side by side and pick the right mix of price and speed for every order.
